Erika Kirk, CEO of conservative activist group Turning Point USA and widow of Charlie Kirk, canceled a scheduled appearance alongside Vice President JD Vance at an event in Athens, Georgia, on Tuesday after receiving serious threats, the organization confirmed. The planned interview was to be a featured part of the event, but due to safety concerns, Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, took the stage in her place.
Speaking to the audience, Kolvet explained that Kirk, 37, had been forced to withdraw because of threats directed at her. “It’s a terrible reflection on the state of reality and the state of the country,” he said, underscoring the heightened risks faced by public figures amid increasing political tensions.
Vice President Vance acknowledged being aware of the threats against Kirk prior to the event. After consultations with the Secret Service, he decided to proceed with his appearance. “Obviously these guys do a very good job,” Vance remarked, referring to his security detail. “I said, ‘Let’s let Erika do what she needs to do for herself and her family, I’m sure Andrew will fill in, and let’s go and make this an amazing event.’”
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about security risks faced by political activists and public officials, particularly those involved in highly charged political circles. No further details about the nature of the threats or any law enforcement response have been released. The event continued as planned, with Kolvet conducting the interview in Kirk’s absence.
