John Campbell, Shai Hope, and Amir Jangoo each scored centuries to power the West Indies to a record One-Day International (ODI) total of 405 for seven against India in the second match of their three-match series on Wednesday in Guwahati. The three centuries marked only the sixth occasion in ODI history that a team has produced three centurions in a single innings.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, West Indies lost Keacy Carey early for nine runs. Campbell and Hope then combined for a 110-run partnership, establishing a solid foundation on a pitch conducive to batting. Campbell reached his second ODI century off 68 balls, striking nine fours and five sixes, before being dismissed by Indian bowler Gurnoor Brar in the following over.
Hope and Jangoo then put together a 182-run stand for the third wicket, dominating India’s bowling attack with consistent boundary hitting. Hope, who also serves as the team’s wicketkeeper, scored his 20th ODI century, surpassing Brian Lara’s record of 19 centuries for the West Indies. Chris Gayle remains the franchise leader with 25 ODI hundreds. Jangoo brought up his second ODI century off 70 balls, celebrating energetically upon reaching the milestone.
West Indies lost three wickets in quick succession after Jangoo’s innings, including Hope, Sherfane Rutherford—who was dismissed first ball—and Jangoo himself, who fell to India’s Ravindra Jadeja. Kuldeep Yadav marked a personal milestone for India by claiming his 200th ODI wicket during the match. Despite the late wickets, Roston Chase remained unbeaten on 29, guiding West Indies to surpass the 400-run mark.
India now faces a challenging run chase, with the required total exceeding their highest successful ODI chase of 362 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013. The series currently stands at 1-0 in India’s favor. This match represents a critical opportunity for West Indies to level the series and regain momentum on home soil.
