A shooting in a Jewish neighborhood in Montreal on Sunday resulted in three fatalities, including a police officer, a resident, and the alleged shooter, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred shortly before midday in the Côte-des-Neiges area, which is known for its kosher restaurants, supermarkets, and a significant Jewish community.

Montreal police expressed profound sorrow over the loss of their officer, emphasizing that the death occurred in the line of duty. They also confirmed the deaths of a resident and the suspect involved. Another officer was reported to have sustained serious injuries, according to a local broadcaster. The identity of the civilian victim has not yet been released, with police scheduled to provide further details during a press briefing on Monday afternoon.

In response to the event, police urged residents to avoid the vicinity as officers and emergency crews secured the scene. A police helicopter was deployed for aerial support amid the ongoing response.

Quebec’s public security minister, Ian Lafreniere, indicated that a crisis unit had been activated and advised the public to remain indoors. He also acknowledged that the motive behind the attack was still unknown, stressing the need for caution and patience as investigations continue.

Quebec Premier Christine Frechette described the events as deeply unsettling and called for restraint while authorities work to clarify the circumstances. She urged against speculation in the absence of confirmed information.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, a prominent advocacy organization, stated it was “closely monitoring the situation” and advised community members to stay vigilant until further details are available.

Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which has heightened concerns in a neighborhood typically regarded as a peaceful hub for Montreal’s Jewish population.
