A 33-year-old man has been arrested following an incident in London in which three Jewish women reported being assaulted, including one who was pushing a baby in a pram. The event occurred on Monday afternoon at around 1:40 p.m. at Clapton Common in Hackney, where community volunteers from the Jewish-run Shomrim neighbourhood watch detained the suspect before police arrived.

The Metropolitan Police are treating the case as a suspected antisemitic hate crime. The women involved are reported to have sustained minor injuries. The man remains in custody and faces suspicion of racially aggravated common assault.

In addition to the Hackney incident, the suspect was also arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm in relation to an unrelated assault that took place on Friday, October 16, in Islington. That incident involved a woman believed to be known to the suspect.

Officers have increased patrols in the Hackney area and are working closely with community leaders to provide reassurance following the incident. Detective Chief Inspector Erica Crawshaw expressed gratitude toward Shomrim volunteers for their prompt intervention and urged anyone with information or victims who have not yet come forward to contact the police. She emphasized that antisemitic behavior and hate crimes will not be tolerated.

According to a social media post by Shomrim, a visibly Jewish woman contacted the group to report being punched in the face by a middle-aged man. Volunteers arrived on the scene within 30 seconds, at which point a second assault reportedly took place in front of them. Shomrim stated the woman was punched twice, resulting in significant bruising. Video footage from the scene shows bystanders pursuing the suspect until he was apprehended and held for police.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson confirmed that three women reported assaults linked to the incident, including the woman pushing the baby, all sustaining minor injuries. The spokesperson also reiterated the ongoing investigation and encouraged others who may have been affected to come forward. The suspect remains in police custody as inquiries continue.
