London authorities have charged three individuals in connection with an alleged arson attack targeting Jewish volunteer ambulances in north-west London. The charges, filed on Thursday, April 4, follow an investigation into the incident that occurred in the early hours of March 23.
Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, both British nationals residing in Leyton, along with a 17-year-old boy, a dual British and Pakistani national from Walthamstow, face charges of arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered. All three are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later today.
The alleged attack involved four ambulances belonging to Hatzola, a volunteer-led ambulance service operating within the Golders Green area. Police reported that the vehicles were set ablaze, resulting in the explosion of gas canisters stored inside.
The arrests of Iqbal, Khan, and the 17-year-old occurred on Wednesday at various locations across east London. Following these arrests, officers from Counter Terrorism Policing London (CTPL) conducted searches at the associated addresses. Although the investigation is being led by CTPL detectives due to the circumstances of the incident, the Metropolitan Police clarified that the incident has not been officially declared an act of terrorism.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of CTPL, acknowledged the "appalling attack" and emphasized the continuous efforts to identify those responsible. She also highlighted the significant support received from the local community throughout the investigation.
DCS Luke Williams, who oversees policing in north-west London, addressed ongoing community concerns, particularly among Jewish communities during the Passover festival period. He noted that an enhanced, customized policing plan has been implemented, focusing on vulnerable areas not only in Golders Green but across London since the arson incident.
In a related development, two other men who were arrested on March 25 in connection with the incident have since been released on bail. They are due to report back to authorities in late April, pending further inquiries.
