Three people died early Wednesday morning in a fire that engulfed a section of the Econo Lodge motel in Wooster, Ohio, fire officials reported. Flames were visible through the roof when firefighters arrived at the scene around 1:30 a.m., according to Wooster Township Fire Chief Dallas Terrell.
The victims were trapped inside a room in a detached, single-story section at the rear of the motel. A motel employee told local media that a man staying in the room called the front desk, alerting staff that they were unable to escape the fire. The employee confirmed that two of those who died were motel employees.
Fire crews made multiple efforts to reach those trapped, but were unsuccessful in rescuing them. Aside from the fatalities, no other injuries were reported. Authorities went room to room in other parts of the motel, safely evacuating guests.
The fire caused significant damage to the back portion of the motel, which is situated about 60 miles south of Cleveland. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
