Three teenagers died after their car crashed through a barrier and plunged into the River Wear in Sunderland on Tuesday afternoon, police confirmed. The victims were identified as Jackson Duke, 17, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Zara Shaw, 16, all local students attending Sunderland College.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene near Wearmouth Bridge at around 1:30 p.m. following reports that a vehicle had entered the water. The black Audi A3 involved was recovered from the river by crane roughly 24 hours later. The car's front end was heavily damaged, and the windshield was shattered.
A fourth occupant, a 17-year-old boy, managed to swim to safety and was subsequently taken to hospital. He was discharged and later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Northumbria Police stated that investigations continue to determine who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Witness accounts suggest the car may have accidentally moved forward instead of reversing before breaking through the barrier. One witness, who called emergency services, described the vehicle arriving at a car park and parking near the barriers. She said the occupants, including the driver and a passenger, briefly exited the vehicle and appeared to swap places before the crash occurred. She said the car then suddenly surged through the barrier, as if the driver had mistakenly selected the wrong gear.
Contrary to some social media reports alleging the teenagers were performing dangerous driving maneuvers such as "donuts," the witness insisted the Audi was not showing off. She noted that skid marks at the scene came from other vehicles unrelated to the crash.
Locals indicated that the site has been popular among young drivers practicing stunts, but there is no direct evidence linking this crash to such activity.
Sunderland College expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the three students. A spokesperson said the tragedy was a heartbreaking loss for the college community and the city, extending condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie acknowledged the devastating impact of the incident on the families involved, emphasizing the loss of promising young lives.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash remain ongoing.
