The West Australian PGA Championship remains tightly contested as the season’s second PGA Tour of Australasia event heads into its final round on Sunday in Kalgoorlie. After a challenging third day marked by difficult conditions on the region’s signature red dirt, twelve golfers find themselves within two strokes of the lead, with a total of 22 players no more than four shots behind.
Queensland’s Louis Dobbelaar leads the pack at six-under par, joining New South Wales competitors Justin Warren and Daniel Gale in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard. Dobbelaar produced the round’s best score with a bogey-free five-under 67, giving him a slight edge as other contenders faltered late in the day. Warren, competing on a tournament invitation, made significant progress with a three-under 69, while Gale’s adventurous play paid off with a par on the final hole to maintain the shared lead.
Another New South Wales player, Adam Coull, sits just one shot behind after posting a three-under 69. Despite his solid play, Coull’s hopes were dented by a costly triple bogey on the closing par-five. Coull had earlier demonstrated sharp form with seven birdies in the first 16 holes.
Among those trailing closely are Hayden Hopewell (69), Andre Lautee (70), Austin Gean (71), Todd Sinnott (71), and overnight leader John Lyras (73), all positioned a single stroke behind the leaders. Lyras experienced a turbulent round that included a double bogey on his second hole and an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to play a fairway wood out of the red dirt on the final hole, settling for a bogey.
One of the standout figures is Austin Gean, a 29-year-old American who remains unranked globally due to a lack of participation in point-earning events. Gean earned his place on the PGA Tour of Australasia through qualifying school in the United States and traveled to Kalgoorlie fresh from his wedding, choosing to spend his honeymoon at the tournament. He praised the Australian event but noted the consistent windy conditions, which he has prepared for mentally.
As the tournament concludes, the tightly packed leaderboard sets the stage for a competitive final round under demanding conditions, with numerous players still in contention for the championship title.
