Tim Merlier claimed his second consecutive stage victory in the 2026 Tour de France by winning stage eight, which concluded with a sprint finish in Bergerac. The 180-kilometre route from Perigueux was marked by a significant solo breakaway by Belgian rider Liam Slock, who broke away with approximately 40 kilometres remaining. Slock maintained a lead of about one minute with 10 kilometres left but was eventually caught just over one kilometre from the finish line.

Merlier, riding for Soudal-QuickStep, overcame a challenging final stretch to surge past his competitors and secure the win. Despite a strong leadout effort from Jasper Philipsen’s Alpecin-Premier Tech teammate Mathieu van der Poel, Philipsen was unable to capitalize and finished fourth. The podium was completed by Biniam Girmay in second and Olav Kooij in third place.

Merlier described the closing moments as tense, needing to continuously fight for position and nearly crashing before the final corner. “I needed to fight for my position all the time until the last minute,” he said. “Before the corner, I was a bit boxed in and then I almost crashed, so I thought it was over. But if you can win one, you can win a second and I’m happy.”

Earlier in the stage, Slock had distanced himself from other breakaway companions Jakub Otruba and Thibault Guernalec on the second of the two categorized climbs. His effort briefly threatened to upset the expected sprint finish but ultimately fell short as he exhausted his energy in the final kilometres through Bergerac’s streets.

Meanwhile, Slovenian rider Tadej Pogacar remained secure in the yellow jersey, benefiting from a relatively calm day for the general classification contenders. The two consecutive sprint finishes allowed the leading riders to preserve energy, with Pogacar extending his lead to two minutes and 42 seconds ahead of his closest rival, Jonas Vingegaard. Pogacar is currently pursuing a record-tying fifth Tour de France title.

With the race progressing, the focus remains on both stage victories and overall standings as riders prepare for upcoming challenges in the race.
