Debutant Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan is set to make her Asian Games badminton debut in the individual competition starting today at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium, following her recovery from a left ankle injury that sidelined her from the team event. Noraqilah will partner with Low Zi Yu in the women's doubles draw.
The Malaysian pair is scheduled to face the world No. 12 duo of Hsu Yin-hui and Lin Jhih-yun from Taiwan in the opening round. This encounter marks a rematch of their July meeting at the Taiwan Open, where Noraqilah and Low secured a surprising victory over the Taiwanese team. Despite this, they face a challenging path in the tournament as they are placed in the same quarter as second-seeded South Korean pair Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee.
Low Zi Yu previously competed in the team quarter-final against South Korea, paired with Cheng Su Yin. The Malaysian duo pushed former world No. 3 pair Jeong Na-eun and Kim Hye-jeong closely but ultimately fell short. Expectations are high for Noraqilah and Low to perform well, especially as they enter the competition without the burden of heavy favoritism.
In the women's doubles category, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah will confront the world No. 9 pair Rachel Rose and Febri Setianingrum from Indonesia in their opening match. This matchup is a rematch of their 2025 Southeast Asian Games semi-final where Pearly and Thinaah emerged victorious. They find themselves in the tournament’s top half alongside top seeds Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning of China and the Japanese duo Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto.
The mixed doubles field includes Malaysian pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jamie, making their third and final Asian Games appearance. They will face Taiwan’s Yang Po-hsuan and Hu Li-fang in the opening round. However, they are grouped in the same quarter as the top-seeded Chinese pair Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping.
Another mixed doubles Malaysian entry, Chen Tang Jie and Su Yin, will begin their campaign against Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Jumar and Urmi Akter. Their section of the draw places them in the bottom half facing a potential encounter with second seeds Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin of China.
