His interest began unexpectedly when he received a 1966 Subaru 360 from a Japanese friend leaving the country. Despite sitting unused for eight years due to a lack of mechanical knowledge, Hatten eventually rebuilt the car, which he still drives today. He now owns multiple microcars, including 11 Subaru 360 models and a 1962 Messerschmitt KR200, which feature prominently on his YouTube channel. While he acknowledges their fragility and limited speed make driving them challenging, Hatten finds the experience rewarding and refers to these vehicles as "quirky" and ego-checking.

Microcars have limited presence on modern roads, partly due to their delicate construction and modest power. Enthusiasts often need mechanical skill to maintain and drive these vehicles safely among contemporary traffic, where every trip can feel like a contest to keep pace with larger cars.

Across the country in Battle Ground, Washington, Damian Donesky has taken a familial connection to microcars a step further. The 38-year-old product designer restored a 1958 BMW Isetta originally owned by his great-grandparents. Nicknamed "Constantney" after his great-grandfather, the Isetta has been in his family since the early 1960s. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Donesky used a period of leave to complete the restoration, assembling much of the drivetrain with support from international microcar clubs. The Isetta’s distinctive single front door, left-hand shifting mechanism, and 13-horsepower engine make it a notable example of microcar engineering. Donesky also operates a local race team, Team Fieroline, and the Isetta has been featured as an honorary pace car at Portland International Raceway, drawing attention for its unusual design.

In New Jersey, Todd Hill, an engineering project manager at a major automaker, acquired a 1980 Austin Mini during the pandemic through a personal connection. Though initially reluctant to engage in restoration, Hill found himself rebuilding much of the vehicle after its engine failed. He describes microcars like his Mini as small and cheerful, offering practical benefits such as ease of parking and impressive fuel efficiency given their five-and-a-half-gallon tanks. While acknowledging the limitations of these vehicles—particularly their modest speed—the novelty and compactness of microcars remain appealing. Hill likens their quirks to those of puppies: demanding but rewarding companions.

Despite their challenges, microcars continue to inspire enthusiasts who appreciate their blend of nostalgia, economy, and distinctive character. From restorations driven by family legacy to hobbyists sharing their experiences online, microcars occupy a unique niche in automotive culture, offering a different kind of driving experience characterized more by joy and simplicity than by speed or power.
