NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) delivered a dominant performance on the fourth day of the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League (ASSRL) National Championships, registering a commanding 52-0 victory over Combined Associated Schools (CAS) in the under-18s competition. The match, held on July 26, showcased the talents of key players, with Cronulla Sharks halfback Liam Challenor standing out prominently.
Challenor was instrumental throughout the game, demonstrating his versatility by influencing play from various positions across the field. One of the most notable moments occurred late in the first half when he deceived CAS defenders with a clever pass to Curtis Mulherin, who scored with little resistance. Mulherin, a powerful second-rower affiliated with Newcastle's SG Ball squad, contributed significantly on the right side, utilizing his speed and agility to find space and break through CAS’s defensive lines multiple times.
Supporting the attack, Jamie Curran, prop for Cronulla and Endeavour Sports, provided strong forward momentum with consistent hit-ups, while hooker Jireh-Trey Stewart delivered effective service from dummy-half. Their combined efforts helped tire out the CAS defense and gain valuable territory for the CHS side.
In a separate under-18 match, NSW Combined Independent Schools (CIS) continued their disappointing campaign, succumbing 34-10 to a rapidly improving NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) team. Despite energetic attempts from CIS players such as Cyrus Bloomfield, Talen Risati, and Ashton Large, the team struggled to breach CCC’s defensive line in advantageous positions.
CCC’s bench proved decisive, particularly with hooker Caleb Zahra creating scoring opportunities, including a well-placed pass to winger Cordell Arama through a narrow gap. Cornelius Pupulalii also made significant contributions, registering two tries with strong runs, including a notable solo effort during the first half.
CIS faced a frustrating tournament moment when a promising attacking move was inadvertently disrupted as Ashton Large was cut off by teammate Bloomfield near the try line, halting a potential score. This miscommunication allowed CCC to capitalize shortly afterward, with Riley Rostron scoring a try two plays later. CIS’s only tries came from Henry Troy and Bloomfield, providing limited consolation.
The championships will continue on Wednesday with day five fixtures, including a highly anticipated interstate under-18 clash between the Queensland Maroons and NSW CHS. Additionally, the under-16 girls’ semi-finals are scheduled. All matches will be livestreamed on Kommunity TV for fans and followers.
