The government has launched a Tk300 crore project aimed at reviving the Mogalhat Land Port and addressing river erosion in Lalmonirhat’s Sadar upazila, officials said. The initiative includes constructing a permanent embankment along the Dharla River to protect the port and surrounding areas from ongoing erosion, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu announced at a ceremony on Thursday.
The event marked the foundation stone laying for a road development project connecting Mogalhat Railway Station to the Dharla River Ghat in Lalmonirhat. Speaking at the event, the minister outlined plans to rehabilitate the long-closed Mogalhat customs station and land port, which is seen as a strategic step to boost local trade and connectivity.
“This project, valued at roughly Tk300 crore, has been approved to build a continuous embankment running from southern Lalmonirhat to the Kurigram border, targeting vulnerable erosion zones,” Dulu said. He expressed confidence that work on the embankment would begin in the near future.
The minister also confirmed ongoing high-level government discussions about reopening the Mogalhat customs station and port. He indicated that a joint visit to the site with the relevant minister is forthcoming to evaluate progress and coordinate implementation efforts.
In addition to infrastructure development, Dulu urged local residents to assist in transforming Mogalhat into a model union, free from crime, drug abuse, and child marriage. He stressed the importance of creating a supportive educational environment by ensuring timely teacher attendance and maintaining school cleanliness.
Officials present at the ceremony included Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Rashedul Haque Prodhan, District Council Administrator AKM Mominul Haque, and Executive Engineer of the Lalmonirhat Roads and Highways Department Debashish Roy, alongside various political leaders and local officials.
