Thousands of Jordanians gathered in southern Karak on Sunday to mourn victims of a deadly attack at a church in the village of Hamoud. The funeral ceremonies drew attendees from across the country, including government officials, ministers, community leaders, and representatives of various social and religious groups, reflecting a unified national response to the incident.

The victims were attending a funeral service at the church last Friday when they were targeted in the assault. The coffins, draped with Jordanian flags, were carried by personnel from the Public Security Directorate in a procession from Karak Government Hospital to the church. Following prayers at the site, the victims were laid to rest in a burial area adjacent to the church. The scale of public participation underscored widespread solidarity and a collective rejection of attempts to incite division between Jordan’s Muslim and Christian communities.

Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah visited Hamoud to offer condolences to the families of those killed, condemning the attack as a “cowardly and treacherous act.” He emphasized that the assault was not only an attack on individuals but an affront to Jordan as a whole, affirming the resilience and unity of the people of Karak. The Crown Prince reiterated King Abdullah’s directive to confront terrorism decisively, stating that all state resources were being mobilized to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.

Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, representing King Abdullah, attended the funeral alongside ministers and senior civilian and military officials. Following the event, he confirmed that government institutions were actively engaged in efforts to identify and prosecute the perpetrators, underscoring the state’s commitment to security and the rule of law.

The attack has prompted widespread grief and condemnation throughout Jordan, reinforcing the government’s stance on countering extremism and maintaining national cohesion.
