The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has launched a series of manga-style videos aimed at warning young people about the dangers of entrapment in criminal activities through deceptively easy money offers on social media. The campaign addresses the growing trend of criminals recruiting individuals online with promises of quick earnings, which often lead to involvement in fraud, robbery, and other offenses.

The animated videos, based on actual cases, highlight how seemingly attractive job proposals can have severe consequences not only for those who accept them but also for their families. A senior official from the police department emphasized the warning, stating that accepting such offers can effectively ruin a person's life. The short videos, each lasting between one and two minutes, are available on YouTube and featured on a dedicated police website targeting loosely organized criminal groups known as “tokuryu.” These groups exploit social media and online job portals to recruit unsuspecting individuals.

According to data from the National Police Agency, there were 50,213 suspected recruitment-related posts flagged by authorities during the first half of this year, marking an increase of 14,576 compared to the same period in the previous year. This rise underscores the urgency of public education efforts like the manga series.

One video illustrates the story of a young man whose excessive spending on smartphone games leads him to respond to a social media post promising easy, well-paying work. Initially receiving 50,000 yen (around $320) after providing his bank account details, he is later arrested when his account is linked to criminal activity. The repercussions extend to his family when a claim for damages arrives at their home and his assets are seized. The video closes with the protagonist acknowledging his dire situation.

Other scenarios depicted include a woman who, after applying for a job at an overseas resort, becomes coerced into defrauding victims via phone calls, and an individual who takes a driver position only to discover he is being used to transport robbers. These stories aim to showcase the varied and often hidden dangers behind recruitment schemes framed as legitimate employment.

The Tokyo police initiative forms part of broader efforts to combat social media-based exploitation and prevent youth from becoming entangled in criminal networks through false work offers.
