Tom Aspinall has vacated the UFC heavyweight title after enduring ongoing complications from an eye injury sustained during his first title defense last October. The 33-year-old British fighter has not competed since the bout against Ciryl Gane, in which Aspinall was poked in both eyes, leading to multiple surgeries and persistent health challenges.

Despite extensive medical treatment and consultations with various specialists, Aspinall has been unable to secure clearance to return to competition. "Ongoing eye complications mean I cannot get cleared to fight right now," Aspinall said. He described undergoing several surgeries and facing setbacks including infections but emphasized his commitment to recovery and eventual return to the sport.

The decision to relinquish the heavyweight championship was made to prioritize his health and to avoid delaying the progression of the division. Aspinall expressed regret but underscored the importance of allowing other contenders the opportunity to compete for the title. The move potentially paves the way for interim champion Ciryl Gane to be officially promoted to undisputed champion status.

Aspinall, who has pursued his mixed martial arts career since childhood, made clear that vacating the belt does not signify retirement. "Stepping away from the title is not stepping away from the sport or the dream," he stated, affirming his intention to continue working toward full recovery and a return to the octagon at the earliest possible time.
