Tom Cruise is confronting a notable career setback following the underwhelming performance of his latest film, "Digger," which marks his first project since the last installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise. The satirical black comedy, directed by Oscar-winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, debuted to disappointing critical and commercial results, taking in approximately £15 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Industry observers now estimate potential losses could climb to £100 million.
"Digger," which features Cruise in an uncharacteristic role as a balding, pot-bellied Texan oil magnate, was positioned as a major shift in the actor’s career. At age 64, Cruise appeared to be seeking a transition away from his usual high-octane action roles toward more serious, character-driven performances. However, the film’s reception was mixed, with critics divided over its merits. Audience response was also tepid, evidenced by a CinemaScore rating of C+, one of the lowest scores recorded for any of Cruise’s films.
The production carried a heavy budget, with reports citing £125 million allocated to the making of the film and an additional £75 million spent on marketing efforts. Despite a significant promotional campaign—including a topless photoshoot for GQ and public appearances alongside celebrities and members of royalty—the film has struggled to recoup its substantial costs. Warner Bros. reportedly responded to the weak box office performance with cautious advertising encouraging audiences to "decide for yourself."
The film’s poor opening has dampened earlier expectations of awards contention, prompting speculation about how this might influence Cruise’s future career choices. He remains attached to upcoming projects such as a sequel to "Days of Thunder" and a third installment in the "Top Gun" series. Cruise himself has previously described his career philosophy as confronting challenges head-on.
In addition to these professional difficulties, Cruise is also facing personal challenges. His 20-year-old daughter, Suri, has reportedly cut ties with him, choosing to drop the Cruise surname and register to vote under a different name. This development represents a significant private struggle amid the actor’s current public and career pressures.
