Tom Cruise is set to take on a markedly different role in the upcoming film *Digger*, a black comedy directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. The movie marks a departure from Cruise’s well-known action-oriented roles, presenting him instead as Digger Rockwell, a character described as the most powerful man in the world.

New footage from *Digger* was unveiled on June 23 during a Warner Bros. event celebrating Cruise’s career, offering viewers their first look at the actor embodying this unusual and darkly comic figure. The scenes suggest a shift toward a more unpredictable and unconventional narrative, distinguishing the project from Cruise’s recent work.

Cruise shared the footage on Instagram, reflecting on his 46-year career. “It has been my privilege to work alongside countless talented artists and crews to create these characters, stories, and films for you all,” he wrote. He also encouraged fans to anticipate the film’s release, noting *Digger* will be in theaters this October.

The film’s official trailer is scheduled for release on July 13. Prior to this preview, Cruise spoke at CinemaCon about the project, describing it as the type of movie he has long wanted to make. “This was the kind of movie that I wanted to make movies. The movie is wild, it’s funny, and I can’t wait for you all to see it,” he said.

Director Iñárritu revealed that the concept for *Digger* originated nearly a decade ago, with discussions between him and Cruise spanning seven years. He praised Cruise’s performance in the role, suggesting it represents a new level of artistic risk. “Watching Tom Cruise becoming Digger Rockwell, I was not prepared for that. Embodying this character, this is another kind of fearless... this role could be his most challenging, high-wire act,” the director remarked.

In addition to Cruise, the film’s cast includes Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy. The collaboration between Cruise and Iñárritu has generated considerable interest as the film approaches its theatrical debut.
