Tom Hanks is set to return to Broadway in the fall of 2027, taking on the dual role of writer and performer in a new play titled "This World of Tomorrow." The production, which will run for a limited engagement, has yet to announce specific dates or a theater venue.

The play is a time-travel romance adapted from Hanks’s 2017 collection of short stories, "Uncommon Type." It centers on a businessman living in 2089 who experiments with time travel and unexpectedly arrives at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in Queens. There, he forms a romantic connection with a woman from that era, setting up a narrative complicated by their separation across different centuries.

Hanks is collaborating with playwright James Glossman on the adaptation. The project was previously staged at the Shed, a performing arts space in Manhattan, in 2026. While critical reviews of that production were mixed, ticket sales were strong.

Hanks, a two-time Academy Award winner for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump," has limited Broadway experience, with his notable previous appearance being in 2013’s "Lucky Guy," for which he received a Tony Award nomination. Reprising her role from the Shed production is Kelli O’Hara, a seasoned Broadway actress who won a Tony in 2015 for her performance in the revival of "The King and I."

The upcoming staging will be directed by Kenny Leon, a Tony Award winner recognized for the 2014 revival of "A Raisin in the Sun." Production is led by Brian Anthony Moreland, known for "Joe Turner’s Come and Gone," in association with the Shed. Official announcements about the production are expected soon.
