CBS Sports has placed Tony Romo on indefinite leave following his arrest last week on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence (OWI). The announcement was made in a statement released by the network on Friday, confirming that Romo will be absent from his duties as the lead NFL game analyst until further notice.

The 46-year-old former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was detained in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, after police stopped him along Interstate 43. Authorities said Romo was pulled over for allegedly passing other vehicles in a gore area, a section designed to separate lanes of traffic. During the stop, officers reported finding an open bottle of alcohol inside Romo’s vehicle on the passenger side. When asked to submit to a breathalyzer test, Romo declined.

Video footage from Milwaukee police body cameras shows Romo being handcuffed and undergoing field sobriety tests at the scene. According to reports, Romo told officers he had been at a golf tournament earlier that day and was en route to visit his grandparents. He has since been cited for three offenses related to the July 23 incident.

Romo has served as CBS Sports’ primary NFL color commentator since 2017, working alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson. Over the course of his broadcasting career, Romo has called three Super Bowls. Prior to his transition to broadcasting, Romo played 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys from 2004 to 2016, earning four Pro Bowl selections. He also holds the franchise record for touchdown passes, totaling 248.

In Romo’s absence, NFL defensive star JJ Watt will step into the lead broadcast role alongside Nantz and Wolfson. Watt, who joined CBS Sports in 2023 after a prolific playing career with the Houston Texans—including being named NFL Defensive Player of the Year three times—previously called games with announcer Ian Eagle during the last season.

CBS Sports has not specified a timeline for Romo’s return, stating only that his leave is effective “until further notice.” The network has indicated it will continue to closely monitor the situation as it develops.
