Chris Noble, the chief constable of Staffordshire Police, resigned on July 28, 2026, shortly before a scheduled gross misconduct hearing was set to take place. Noble had been suspended since August 2025 amid an investigation into allegations concerning his conduct outside of work as well as claims that he shared confidential information without a policing purpose.

Noble’s resignation was submitted to Ben Adams, the Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner, who accepted it with immediate effect. The disciplinary panel that was scheduled to consider the case proceeded in his absence but subsequently adjourned the hearing and imposed reporting restrictions regarding the details of the allegations.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which was leading the investigation following a referral by the police and crime commissioner, had identified three areas where Noble was alleged to have breached police standards: a lack of integrity, a lack of diligence, and discreditable conduct. The IOPC confirmed that it continues to investigate other allegations related to Noble but declined to provide further details citing operational sensitivities.

Before joining Staffordshire Police as chief constable in 2021, Chris Noble served as assistant chief constable at Humberside Police. His suspension and subsequent resignation mark a significant development after being in his current role for nearly five years.

The circumstances surrounding Noble’s behaviour remain under investigation, and further information has been withheld by authorities due to the sensitivity of ongoing inquiries. The Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner has not disclosed additional comments aside from confirming receipt and acceptance of the resignation.
