Shoppers in the United Kingdom can now pay for goods in stores using facial recognition technology, marking a first for the country’s retail sector. Online bank Revolut has introduced "Revolut Pay with Smile," a checkout method that verifies customers’ identities through a selfie taken during account registration. This system eliminates the need for customers to carry their phones to complete a transaction.

The service is currently undergoing a trial at Kiss the Hippo Coffee, a cafe chain in London, with plans for a broader rollout later this year. For retailers to adopt the technology, they need to install a specialized Revolut Register at the point of sale, but they will not incur processing fees associated with transactions.

Revolut Business representative Alex Codina described the innovation as a modernization of traditional checkout systems, combining advanced processing capabilities with facial recognition to streamline purchases. Kiss the Hippo Coffee's Alex Damgaci emphasized that quick and seamless checkout experiences have become a standard expectation.

The company also confirmed there are no spending limits when using the facial recognition payment option. Industry observers suggest that other banks may adopt similar technology in the future, potentially making facial recognition a common feature in retail payments over time.
