Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, currently the head of the Royal Canadian Navy, has been promoted to the position of Vice-Chief of Defence Staff, the Canadian Armed Forces announced in an internal communication this week. Topshee will succeed Vice-Chief of Defence Staff Stephen Kelsey, assuming the military’s second-highest leadership role.
Known for his candid approach and openness about challenges facing the Navy, Topshee has previously voiced concerns over the branch’s condition. In 2023, he released a video describing the Navy as being in a “critical state,” reflecting his willingness to publicly address internal issues.
In a statement responding to his promotion, Topshee expressed gratitude and optimism. “I’m excited to be selected to be the vice and looking forward to taking on this new role at a pretty important time for the CAF,” he said in an email.
The appointment comes at a significant juncture for the Canadian Armed Forces as they navigate evolving operational demands and seek to modernize their capabilities. Topshee’s experience leading the Navy and his direct communication style position him to influence the military’s future direction in his new role.
