In Merrillville, Indiana, located approximately 33 miles southeast of Chicago, the storms tore roofs off buildings, toppled trees, and damaged vehicles. More than 200 structures sustained damage, with some completely destroyed, according to local authorities. Residents like Marsha Smith, who was inside her apartment complex during the tornado, described the experience as harrowing, noting the ominous calm before the storm and the intense noise she likened to a freight train. Emergency crews and municipal workers were actively engaged in clearing debris and blocked roadways, while regional agencies joined local first responders in assessing the damage and aiding recovery efforts. The American Red Cross established a 700-bed shelter to accommodate displaced residents.

Similar destruction was reported in Streator, Illinois, about 100 miles southwest of Chicago, and in Hebron, Indiana. The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes in these areas and is conducting surveys to determine the total number of tornadoes that touched down. In Streator, emergency personnel inspected damage to nearly a dozen homes, with some residences completely destroyed. A reunification center was set up at city hall to assist displaced individuals, and the Red Cross opened a shelter to provide aid. Mayor Tara Bedei expressed relief that no deaths occurred and praised the swift response of emergency teams.

Cleanup and power restoration operations continued into Friday and are expected to extend through the coming days as utility companies work to restore electrical service across the affected regions. Authorities are also preparing to request emergency declarations to facilitate the allocation of recovery funding to support rebuilding efforts. Downed trees and power lines remain obstacles in some neighborhoods, complicating recovery activities. Despite the widespread damage, officials reported that injuries were limited, with four people hospitalized for minor wounds.
