A massive glacier collapse occurred early Wednesday, triggering a torrent of ice, rock, and silt that swept through the steep valleys linking the Tibetan Plateau to northern Nepal. Initially mistaken for a minor earthquake, the event was later identified as a glacier detachment powerful enough to register as a 5.2 magnitude seismic tremor.
The resulting debris flow surged into the Lhende River basin, generating a destructive wave of mud and sediment that devastated areas along the China-Nepal border. In China, the Gyirong Port border checkpoint in the Tibet Autonomous Region was severely impacted, while downstream regions in Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts also suffered extensive damage.
The torrent reached settlements near the border as a wall of debris approximately nine meters high. It was reported capable of obliterating concrete bridges and burying structures under layers of thick sediment. The destructive flow spread across broader valley floors, exacerbating the scale of the disaster.
Rescue operations have been ongoing amid a growing death toll and widespread disruption. As of the latest reports, more than 1,500 individuals remain unaccounted for. Emergency teams are working to evacuate survivors and provide aid while monitoring concerns about potential secondary flooding. Officials highlighted the formation of a new barrier lake on the Tibetan side of the border, raising fears that its waters might breach and cause further downstream flooding.
Authorities in both China and Nepal are coordinating efforts to assess the full extent of the damage and respond to the humanitarian needs of affected communities. The event underscores the vulnerability of Himalayan regions to glacier-related natural disasters linked to climatic and geological conditions.
