John Tortorella will not return as head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights following the conclusion of their run to the Stanley Cup Final. The team’s general manager, Kelly McCrimmon, announced Tuesday that Tortorella’s tenure, which began on an interim basis late last season, has come to an end.
Tortorella was hired on March 30 after McCrimmon dismissed Bruce Cassidy with eight games remaining in the regular season. Under Tortorella’s leadership, the Golden Knights won seven of those final eight games, then advanced through three playoff rounds before falling to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final on Sunday night.
The 67-year-old coach, a native of Concord, Massachusetts, had been out of the NHL for approximately one year before receiving the call from Vegas. His brief stint with the Golden Knights was notable for its immediate impact and a deep postseason run, though the team was ultimately unable to secure the championship.
In other NHL developments, the Philadelphia Flyers acquired goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit from the Toronto Maple Leafs. The transaction sent goalie Samuel Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a third-round pick in the upcoming draft to Toronto.
The NHL also reported that this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs achieved record viewership in the United States, averaging 1.8 million viewers, an increase of 68 percent compared to last year’s postseason.
