Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has rejected the application of former party chairman Sir Grant Shapps to stand as a parliamentary candidate, marking a notable move within the Conservative Party as it seeks to redefine itself following significant losses in the 2024 general election.

Sir Grant Shapps, who lost his seat representing Welwyn Hatfield, Hertfordshire, two years ago, had hoped to return to the House of Commons. However, his bid to stand for Parliament was blocked under Mrs. Badenoch's leadership. The party leader emphasized that she is steering the Conservatives in a new direction, focusing on bringing in fresh faces and moving away from the previous era that ended with the party’s exit from government.

“This is a very different party from the one that was removed from government in 2024,” Mrs. Badenoch said, underscoring her commitment to renewal and change within the party structure.

Sir Grant Shapps declined to comment on the decision. The move highlights ongoing internal challenges as the Conservative Party works to rebuild and reposition itself ahead of future elections.
