Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a club-record transfer worth £85 million. The deal surpasses Tottenham’s previous highest fee, which was the £65 million paid for Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth in 2024.

The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder was a standout player for West Ham during the 2025-2026 season, making 36 appearances in the Premier League and contributing three goals. Despite Fernandes’ individual performances, West Ham were relegated at the end of the campaign.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, known for his ambitious approach in the transfer market, reportedly outmaneuvered Manchester United in securing Fernandes. The latter had also expressed interest in acquiring the player but apparently withdrew due to the high transfer fee and Fernandes’ contract demands.

The move signals Tottenham’s intent to strengthen their midfield as they prepare for the upcoming season. Fernandes is expected to bring creativity and dynamism to De Zerbi’s squad following West Ham’s drop from the top flight. Further details regarding the contract length and official announcement from both clubs are anticipated in the coming days.
