Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Newcastle United for the transfer of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali in a deal initially valued at £92.5 million, which could increase to £100 million contingent on Tottenham securing repeated qualifications for the UEFA Champions League.

Pending the completion of formalities, the transfer would set a new club record for Tottenham, who recently agreed to a separate £85 million deal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi reportedly envisions building his squad around Tonali, with the player expressing enthusiasm for both the manager’s project and the prospect of living in London.

Tonali, 26, has agreed to personal terms including a significant wage increase, reportedly earning at least £275,000 per week across a six-year contract. The midfielder joined Newcastle in the summer of 2023 for £55 million from AC Milan. His time at the club was disrupted by a 10-month suspension for breaching betting regulations, but upon his return in August 2024, Tonali became instrumental under then-manager Eddie Howe. He contributed to Newcastle’s Carabao Cup victory in 2025 and their qualification for the Champions League.

However, Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season, with Tonali’s performances reportedly affected by growing speculation about his future. This transfer is part of a broader restructuring within Howe’s squad following the departures of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona in May and Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer. Howe has been rebuilding the team since his appointment in November 2021 after Newcastle’s acquisition by Saudi Arabian investors.

In a related move, Tottenham have agreed to sell centre-back Luka Vuskovic to Brighton & Hove Albion in a £50 million transfer. Vuskovic, a member of Croatia’s World Cup squad, joined Spurs last summer for £10 million from Hajduk Split but has yet to make an appearance for the club due to a loan spell at Hamburg during the previous season.
