Mo Toure has returned to training after a calf injury scare during Australia’s 2-0 victory over Turkey in Vancouver. The 22-year-old Socceroos forward appeared to injure his calf just before the second hydration break in the match, raising concerns about a potential tear. Post-match, Toure acknowledged the muscle was still sore and admitted he had worried about the extent of the injury. However, after rest and icing, he rejoined the team’s training session ahead of their next fixtures.
The Socceroos departed Vancouver late Saturday (US time) and managed only a few hours' sleep before undertaking a recovery workout. Midfielder Connor Metcalfe, who scored Australia’s second goal in the match, said he had not noticed Toure’s discomfort while on the pitch. “But the guy is 5-foot-8 and full of muscle, so he's bound to cramp,” Metcalfe said. Despite limited rest, Metcalfe described his World Cup debut goal as an unforgettable moment. “It was probably the same feeling the fans get when they see the ball go in,” he remarked. After scoring, Metcalfe initially considered removing his shirt in celebration but chose a knee slide instead to avoid a yellow card.
The win over Turkey defied many experts’ expectations, as Australia had largely been viewed as underdogs. Toure said the team was undeterred by external doubts. “They can keep counting us out. At the end of the day we know what we have to do and we just want to perform,” he said.
This tournament marks Toure’s first World Cup, as it does for 10 of Australia’s starting lineup in the match against Turkey. Only captain and centre back Harry Souttar had previous World Cup experience. Toure expressed confidence heading into the game, noting the extensive preparation the team underwent during their training camp. “It's been a very long camp, we've worked towards it, so I knew we were ready physically. It was a challenge mentally and I feel like we accepted the challenge and we stuck to the game plan,” he said.
Toure also highlighted the personal significance of the occasion, as it was the first away match he played with his entire family present among the supporters.
