Andrew Stanton, director of the latest installment of the Toy Story franchise, has introduced a new character named Lilypad in Toy Story 5, reflecting the evolving landscape of children's playtime. Lilypad, a tablet-like device voiced by actress Greta Lee, represents the increasing presence of technology in children's lives, a departure from the traditional focus on classic toys such as Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie.

Stanton, who previously won Academy Awards for directing Finding Nemo (2003) and WALL-E (2008), also co-wrote the earlier Toy Story films. In this fifth chapter, he explores the impact of digital technology on how children play, likening it to the era when television first entered homes. He acknowledged ongoing debates about technology’s long-term effects but noted that, much like television, it has become an inextricable part of childhood.

Greta Lee described Lilypad as a character who is not entirely villainous but presents a challenge to the established toys. “They start off with a very funny antagonistic relationship, but they all want what’s best for Bonnie,” the film’s main child character, Lee said. The various characters differ in their approaches but share the goal of looking out for Bonnie’s well-being.

Despite concerns historically expressed about technology’s role in play, Stanton remains optimistic. He emphasized that while computers and tablets introduce new dimensions, the charm of imperfection and human touch remains essential to the storytelling and animation process. The use of digital animation, after all, was pivotal in enabling the Toy Story films.

Toy Story 5 has been met with commercial success, grossing over £500 million in its first three weeks and projected to approach £900 million in total. Part of the film’s audience appeal may be attributed to the involvement of singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who co-wrote an original song for the movie titled "I Knew It, I Knew It." Swift also performed at the film’s premiere alongside franchise composer Randy Newman.

The film continues to feature beloved characters voiced by original cast members including Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Stanton noted that actors typically look forward to returning when the creative team has done a good job and they enjoy reprising their roles.

Overall, Toy Story 5 blends familiar elements with contemporary themes, highlighting the intersection of nostalgia and modern technology while maintaining the franchise’s appeal to both longstanding fans and new audiences.
