A traffic warden with two decades of experience was dismissed after using a blue badge that belonged to his deceased mother, an employment tribunal heard. Dinesh Patel, who served as a civil enforcement officer and later senior civil enforcement officer for the London Borough of Harrow, was found to have violated the very rules he was tasked with upholding.
Patel began his career in 2001 and was promoted to senior civil enforcement officer in 2019. His duties included monitoring, reporting, and enforcing the proper use of disabled blue badges, as well as providing testimony in court on related criminal and civil offenses.
The case was reviewed by the Watford Employment Tribunal following Patel's dismissal. He maintained that his use of the blue badge was a “silly mistake” rather than a deliberate breach. Nevertheless, the tribunal ruled against him, affirming the council’s decision to terminate his employment. Judge Nathaniel Caiden noted that Patel’s length of service should have made him particularly aware of the regulations.
The council had emphasized that as an enforcement officer responsible for preventing blue badge misuse, Patel needed to exemplify compliance with these standards. His attempt to claim unfair dismissal was rejected by the tribunal, underscoring the importance of maintaining integrity in public service roles related to enforcement and accessibility.
