Trainer George Boughey is preparing to conclude a successful season at Newmarket as his filly Libertango competes in the Cheveley Park Stakes, the premier two-year-old race of the year, on Saturday. The contest at the Rowley Mile represents a significant opportunity for Boughey, who has quickly established himself as a rising talent in British flat racing.
Boughey first drew widespread attention when Bow Echo, now retired, claimed victory in the 2,000 Guineas earlier this year, delivering one of the season’s most memorable moments at Newmarket. Since then, the trainer has sought a new standout performer, and Libertango has emerged as a leading prospect. With three wins from four starts, including a notable success in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, Libertango enters the Cheveley Park Stakes as one of the shortest-priced Group 1 runners of Boughey’s career.
Libertango’s only defeat came at the hands of Senorita Bonita at the July Festival, a narrow loss that Boughey attributes to tactical errors during the race. The filly bounced back with a convincing win in the Lowther Stakes at York last month, demonstrating both fitness and resilience. Boughey indicated that adjustments will be made for Saturday’s race based on their better understanding of the filly’s capabilities. He noted that in the previous meeting at Newmarket, Libertango may have engaged too early and lost momentum, whereas the approach at York was more effectively timed.
The Cheveley Park Stakes will feature a competitive field, including Senorita Bonita and the highly regarded Sun Goddess, who impressed with strong performances at the Curragh and York. Boughey acknowledged the quality of the opposition but expressed confidence in Libertango’s preparedness and form. He emphasized the filly’s strong work at home and her mental composure, which they believe will serve her well in the race and potentially beyond.
Looking ahead, Boughey plans to target the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland, hoping that Libertango can continue to develop and perform internationally. Nevertheless, he stressed the importance of Saturday’s contest, describing the Cheveley Park Stakes as a prestigious event that represents a milestone for his stable.
“Last year, we had Bow Echo in the Royal Lodge here, and he was the best two-year-old we’ve had,” Boughey said. “Now Libertango is the shortest-priced horse we’ve had for a Group 1 at two, and her work at home has mirrored that. It looks like it’s going to be a proper smash-up with three top-class fillies going head to head on fast ground. When you start out as a trainer, you dream of being involved in days like this. We’ve been very lucky with Bow Echo, and hopefully, we can make a few more memories with this filly.”
Billy Loughnane is expected to take the ride on Libertango, with both aiming to secure a signature win to cap a notable season for the young trainer.
