Trainer Jason Deamer is preparing for a busy weekend at Royal Randwick, where two of his Newcastle-trained horses, Just In Time and Spaceballs, will compete in the $500,000 Four Pillars Midway Benchmark 68 over 1500 meters on Saturday. Both horses are part of a partnership between Deamer and Dynamic Syndications, a collaboration that will continue with another major race three days later.
Deamer described Just In Time and Spaceballs as difficult to separate ahead of the race, noting that barrier draw and race conditions will likely influence the outcome. Just In Time, carrying 60.5 kilograms and ridden by Zac Lloyd, has secured barrier six, which Deamer views as more advantageous. Spaceballs, drawn wide in barrier 14, will carry 58.5 kilograms thanks to a 3-kilogram claim by jockey Shannen Llewellyn. Both horses recently raced in Queensland and returned to Newcastle for a light training week leading up to the event.
The Four Pillars Midway race is regarded as open and competitive, with all runners carrying significant weights under the Benchmark 68 classification. Deamer emphasized the open nature of the contest and the importance of positioning during the race to determine the winner.
Following the Four Pillars event, Deamer and Dynamic Syndications will aim to capture the $3 million Listed Big Dance over 1600 meters on the following Tuesday. Deamer’s filly It’s A Knockout, a daughter of Dundeel, earned her place in the Big Dance by winning the event’s Wild Card qualifier. Andrew Adkins is scheduled to ride her in the main event.
Despite drawing the challenging barrier 15, Deamer remains optimistic about It’s A Knockout’s chances, citing favorable weather conditions in the forecast, including the potential for rain, which could benefit the filly’s performance.
The trainer-syndicator partnership previously came close to victory in the Four Pillars Midway race in 2022 when Awesome Lad finished a close second. This year, Deamer and Dynamic Syndications hope to build on that success with their contenders at Royal Randwick.
