Actor Richard E Grant’s wardrobe choices on the BBC reality show Celebrity Traitors have drawn attention due to his visible use of Burberry-branded clothing, raising questions about possible conflicts with the broadcaster’s editorial guidelines. Grant, 69, has appeared on the program wearing multiple Burberry items, including a coat and two scarves prominently featuring the fashion house’s signature check patterns.
The BBC’s editorial standards prohibit on-screen talent from wearing clothing or using products they have agreed to promote, advertise, endorse, or in which they hold a financial interest. Grant has a history with Burberry, having appeared in the company’s “London in Love” campaign alongside Kate Winslet and Naomi Campbell in February 2022. That same month, he also walked the runway for the brand and later attended the unveiling of Burberry’s Christmas tree at Claridge’s hotel in November of the same year.
Despite these connections, BBC insiders have indicated that Grant was not actively engaged in any promotional work for Burberry at the time the show was filmed. Nonetheless, Burberry’s website continues to feature Grant endorsing its £2,000 “Burberry Trench” coat, maintaining his association with the brand in the public eye.
In addition to the contractual restrictions, the BBC’s guidelines also limit the visual prominence of brands on screen, regardless of a contract or endorsement deal. This policy is designed to avoid unauthorized product placement or perceived advertising within the broadcaster’s content.
The situation with Grant is not the first instance of potential guideline breaches related to branded clothing on the BBC. Earlier this year, presenter Monty Don was reported for wearing a Barbour jacket on Gardeners’ World while simultaneously appearing in advertising campaigns for the same company.
The BBC has yet to comment publicly on the matter concerning Richard E Grant’s attire on Celebrity Traitors. Whether the broadcaster will take any action remains to be seen as scrutiny continues over the intersection of talent endorsements and editorial compliance.
