The Netflix drama Adolescence emerged as the standout winner at the recent BAFTA TV Awards, securing multiple top honours across key categories. The show received four awards, including Best Leading Actor for Stephen Graham, Best Supporting Actor for Owen Cooper, Best Supporting Actress for Christine Tremarco, and Best Limited Drama.
Stephen Graham, who also co-wrote Adolescence, noted this was his first BAFTA win after eight prior nominations. Reflecting on the achievement, he quoted The Beatles, saying, "all we need is love." Owen Cooper, 16, who portrays Jamie, a troubled character in the series, expressed surprise at winning, remarking, “a year ago I was presenting an award and now I’m collecting one.” His performance, already recognised by Golden Globe and Emmy wins, was highlighted as particularly notable. Christine Tremarco, who plays Jamie’s mother, was awarded Best Supporting Actress, contributing to the show's critical acclaim. Producer Mark Herbert described the series’ script as emotionally powerful, stating it “ripped out our hearts and punched us in the gut.”
In addition to Adolescence’s success, the reality series Celebrity Traitors won the P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award, the only prize voted on by the public. The award recognized Alan Carr’s strategic win on the show. Carr, 49, celebrated his devious gameplay and humorously questioned the skills of his fellow contestants. Fellow celebrity contestants such as Dame Celia Imrie watched as the moment unfolded.
Other notable honours included a Fellowship award to Dame Mary Berry, who received the accolade at age 91. Consumer campaigner Martin Lewis was given a special award, reflecting his impactful career; he recalled writing his acceptance speech shortly before the ceremony, connecting it to a poignant personal history. EastEnders was named Best Soap, while Code of Silence earned Best Drama Series.
Among the lighter moments, Amandaland’s Lucy Punch was recognized for her appearance, and the series took home Best Scripted Comedy. Steve Coogan won Best Actor in a Comedy category for his role in How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge). Claudia Winkleman hosted the event, acknowledging the challenges of balancing the ceremony with her filming schedule.
The BAFTA TV Awards showcased a range of impressive talent across drama, reality, and comedy, highlighting both emerging performers and established industry figures.
