British Airways (BA) faced significant operational disruptions on September 8 and 9 after a technical failure at a critical air traffic control node prompted cancellations of approximately 550 flights, affecting over 85,000 passengers. The incident primarily impacted BA’s extensive long-haul schedule centered at London Heathrow Airport, complicating efforts to restore normal operations as aircraft and crews were stranded away from their home base.

On September 9 alone, BA cancelled around 200 flights, while other airlines operating in the UK airspace, including Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizz Air, and Virgin Atlantic, reported far fewer disruptions. Ryanair did not cancel any flights that day, and the other carriers each reported roughly 30 cancellations. Virgin Atlantic, which also operates some long-haul routes from Heathrow but with a smaller fleet than BA, experienced fewer cancellations.

Experts underscored the complexity of resuming services after the outage, particularly since around 8,000 flights transit British airspace daily. Disruptions cause an imbalance in aircraft and crew positioning, requiring additional flights to clear backlogs. Cirium data showed that on September 9, about 327 flights, or approximately 5.6% of the 5,869 scheduled flights, were cancelled. The previous day saw even greater disruption, with more than 1,750 flight cancellations reported at UK airports.

BA indicated it managed to operate nearly 80% of its scheduled flights on September 9 despite the challenges. The airline described the recovery effort as “severe and complex,” emphasizing the substantial impact on passengers when a component of the aviation system fails.

London Heathrow, the busiest airport in the UK, warned that delays and disruptions would persist as operations normalized. Nigel Wicking, chief executive of the Heathrow Airline Operators Committee, noted that many aircraft were stranded at airports across Europe, and limited availability of ad-hoc landing slots at Heathrow would further slow their return. Gatwick Airport, another major London hub, also cautioned that a full recovery to normal operations would take time.

The source of the disruption was traced to a technical fault at NATS, a public-private air traffic control provider based in Swanwick, Hampshire. The government stated the outage was not the result of a cyberattack. NATS officials described the recovery as complex and progressive, impacting the entire UK aviation network.

This incident follows a pattern of intermittent outages in British airspace in recent years, including a radar-related shutdown last summer and a major air traffic halt three years earlier, all occurring under NATS leadership. Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary criticized NATS CEO Martin Rolfe. Rolfe pledged a thorough investigation and defended the quality of the UK’s air traffic management system. The British government, which holds a significant stake in NATS, has voiced ongoing confidence in Rolfe’s leadership.

NATS Swanwick manages air traffic en route over England and Wales and lower-altitude flights to and from London airports, overseeing roughly 2.5 million flights annually. Heathrow itself handles about 1,400 flights and 200,000 passengers daily, with peak operations averaging 40 takeoffs per hour.

The disruptions have compounded operational challenges for Middle Eastern carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways, which rely heavily on Heathrow as a gateway to Europe and have faced increased strain amid regional tensions related to the war in Iran. Emirates operates about 20 daily flights to London, frequently using its large Airbus A380 aircraft.
