Travelers planning to fly through Hamad International Airport (HIA) this summer have been urged to verify all travel documents and comply with security regulations to avoid delays or disruptions. The Ministry of Interior (MoI) hosted a Safe Travel awareness webinar on June 15, bringing together officials from the Airport Passports Department and the Airport Security Department to outline key requirements and common pitfalls.

Captain Ali Ahmed Ali al-Kuwari of the Airport Passports Department emphasized the importance of completing all necessary checks prior to arriving at the airport, particularly amid the high volume of passengers during the summer travel season. He highlighted that certain travelers, especially employees requiring official travel permits, must ensure they have valid approval before departure. Lack of such permits, which some travelers may only realize at immigration, can result in denied boarding or delays.

Passengers were also advised to use the Metrash platform to review their travel status, including any outstanding traffic violations, overstay fines, or travel bans linked to their Qatar ID (QID). While fines for traffic offenses or overstays can be settled electronically, addressing travel bans requires contacting relevant authorities well before departure.

Passport validity remains an essential consideration as well, Capt al-Kuwari noted. Although airport authorities might not prohibit travel for passports nearing expiration, some airlines and destination countries require passports to be valid for at least three to six months beyond the date of travel.

The webinar also addressed baggage regulations and airport security measures. Captain Abdullah Shaheen Mohamed al-Rumaihi from the Airport Security Department stressed that travelers should pack their own luggage and avoid carrying items for others if they are unaware of the contents. He warned that accepting packages without knowledge of their contents may lead to serious repercussions if prohibited materials are involved.

Passengers were reminded that sharp objects such as scissors, knives, and razor blades are not allowed in cabin baggage. Additionally, items including sports equipment like billiard sticks and rackets, toy weapons made of metal or plastic, flammable perfumes and sprays, and fresh foods such as meat and fish are prohibited from hand luggage. Any prohibited items detected will be confiscated and not returned to their owners.

Furthermore, Capt al-Rumaihi cautioned travelers against making jokes about carrying explosives or restricted items when questioned by airline staff. Such comments are treated with utmost seriousness and can result in flight cancellations and referral to security authorities.

Officials concluded that these measures aim to ensure passenger safety and facilitate smooth airport operations rather than cause inconvenience. Travelers are advised to carefully prepare ahead of their journeys to comply with all requirements and avoid potential issues at HIA.
