Liverpool midfielder Trey Nyoni has been working diligently to impress new head coach Andoni Iraola ahead of the upcoming season. The 19-year-old has demonstrated his potential during the club's summer tour of the United States, appearing in the first half of three preseason matches against Sunderland, Wrexham, and Leeds United.

Nyoni, who made his senior debut in February 2024, has accumulated 20 appearances for Liverpool so far. While he has yet to start a Premier League match, the midfielder was included in the matchday squad 29 times during the previous top-flight campaign. Determined to build on his development, Nyoni focused on improving his game over the summer break to make a strong impression under Liverpool’s new managerial setup.

“I knew I had a lot to improve, so I’ve tried to work on it over the summer and come back and give myself the best chance possible this pre-season,” Nyoni said. He added that while he has seen progress, there is still room for growth: “I still need to keep improving, keep developing each game but so far it’s been all right.”

During the tour, Liverpool secured victories over Sunderland and Wrexham but suffered a 4-2 loss to Leeds United despite holding a 2-0 lead at halftime. Nyoni featured in the first half of the Leeds game, which highlighted both the team’s strengths and areas for improvement. “At the start, the first game was good but we knew we could do better,” he reflected. “Then in the second game we played a lot better. In the first half (against Leeds) we played really well. In the second half we lost our way a bit.”

Nyoni also noted the adjustment period involved with integrating new players and a new coach. “We’re still learning the system, so we’ll keep progressing. There’s a few new guys and a new manager as well, so I feel like the bond of being there together is the core. It’s been a good tour.”

The midfielder is expected to continue featuring in Liverpool’s remaining preseason friendlies, with matches scheduled against Monaco and Como at Anfield in the coming weeks. These fixtures could provide further opportunities for Nyoni to stake his claim for more playing time during the forthcoming season.
