The father of a nine-year-old girl who died after being found seriously injured on an industrial estate in Arbroath, Scotland, has appeared in court charged with her murder.

Minnie Merriman, from West Yorkshire, was discovered just after midnight on Monday at the Elliot industrial estate in Arbroath, Angus, while her family was camping nearby. She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she later died. Three others, believed to be family members, were also treated at the hospital but subsequently discharged.

Christopher Rice, 35, of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court on Tuesday charged with Minnie’s murder. He made no plea and was remanded in custody. Rice is expected to appear again in court within the next week.

Police have stated that Rice and Minnie were known to each other and that they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the case. West Yorkshire Police are assisting Police Scotland in the ongoing investigation.

Minnie’s family released a statement through Police Scotland expressing their profound grief. They described her as “beloved, absolutely incredible, beautiful and brave” and asked for privacy during this difficult time. Specialist officers are providing support to the family.

The Elliot industrial estate, a busy area near Hospitalfield housing estate and close to retail parks and Arbroath seafront, was cordoned off by police as investigations continued. Local workers reported being stopped and required to provide identification to access the site. Dozens of floral tributes have been left at the scene, where a forensic tent and police presence remain.

Residents in the area described the circumstances surrounding the family’s presence at the site. One witness reported seeing the family cooking on an outdoor stove just hours before the incident, while another noted the unusual sight of a tent pitched near a car at the industrial estate.

Detective Inspector Mike Ness of Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team said their thoughts remain with those affected, particularly Minnie’s family. He urged anyone with information to contact police.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events leading to Minnie’s death.
