Boncho Genchev made a lasting impression during his time at Hendon, remembered by former teammates and supporters for both his skill and his positive influence off the pitch. One of his earliest notable moments came early in his Hendon career with an overhead scissors kick goal just 15 minutes into his first starting appearance. This display of technical ability, combined with an infectious attitude, quickly established him as a figure admired by younger players in the squad.
Genchev’s versatility and commitment were further highlighted in a November 2000 match against Carshalton Athletic. When Hendon’s first-choice goalkeeper Richard Wilmot suffered a broken arm, Genchev convinced manager Frank Murphy that he had prior goalkeeping experience. He stepped into the role, maintaining a clean sheet and making several key plays, including an impressive save and a remarkable run where he dribbled past three attackers before clearing the ball. Despite trailing 1-0 at halftime, Hendon rallied to win the match 2-1.
Former teammates recall Genchev as a player who simply wanted to be on the field and contribute, regardless of his position or circumstances. His willingness to adapt and his approachable nature left a strong impact within the Hendon dressing room, earning him lasting respect and affection among the club’s community.
