Former footballer Doug Loft, who captained both Port Vale and Gillingham during his career, has died suddenly at the age of 39, clubs announced over the weekend. The cause of death was described as a medical emergency.
Loft’s professional career spanned 18 years, during which he amassed more than 420 appearances. He joined Port Vale in 2009 following a transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion, making 196 appearances for the club until 2014. He later played for Gillingham, featuring in 70 matches, and also had spells with Colchester United and Shrewsbury.
Both clubs expressed their condolences publicly. Gillingham released a statement on social media expressing devastation at Loft’s passing, extending sympathies to his wife Laura, their daughters Freya and Amelie, and his wider family and friends. Port Vale paid tribute to Loft’s leadership and commitment, highlighting his role as club captain during their promotion to Sky Bet League One in the 2012-13 season. He was also named Port Vale’s player of the year for the 2011-12 campaign.
“Loft’s leadership, passion and dedication to the badge helped establish him as a firm favourite,” Port Vale said in a statement on their website. “His contribution to that promotion-winning side will forever remain part of the club’s history.”
As a mark of respect, Port Vale announced plans for a minute’s silence ahead of their upcoming fixture and indicated that players would be asked to wear black armbands, pending approval from Loft’s family.
