Former Labour minister Sir George Howarth has died at the age of 77, parliament was informed. Sir Howarth served as the member of Parliament for the Knowsley constituency in Merseyside for nearly 38 years, from his election in 1986 until he stepped down at the 2024 general election.
The announcement of his death was made to MPs by Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who described it as “another sad loss” to the House of Commons and praised Sir George as a distinguished politician. He noted Sir Howarth’s long-standing commitment to public service and his contributions to parliamentary life.
Sir George Howarth was a Privy Counsellor and held ministerial roles during his career, including serving at the Home Office from 1997 to 1999 and subsequently at the Northern Ireland Office until 2001. Throughout his tenure, he was also known for his advocacy for justice related to the Hillsborough disaster.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to Sir Howarth’s dedication, highlighting his lifetime of service to his party, his country, and his constituents. Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis acknowledged Sir Howarth’s extensive parliamentary experience and remarked that he would be greatly missed.
Sir George Howarth is survived by his wife, Julie.
