The family of a 19-year-old kayaker from Rothbury have paid tribute to their loved one, Michael Henry, who is believed to have died after his kayak capsized near Boulmer, Northumberland. The incident occurred shortly after 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7.

According to Northumbria Police, two men were in the kayak when it overturned in the North Sea. One man was able to swim to a buoy and was subsequently rescued by the Coastguard. Michael Henry, however, went missing following the capsizing. Extensive search efforts were conducted both at sea and along the coast, assisted by emergency services, but were eventually called off, with authorities stating that Henry is presumed to have died at sea.

In a statement, Henry’s family described him as a “much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, team-mate and friend” and highlighted his passion for sports and the outdoors. They also noted he was preparing for travel plans over the summer and had hoped to begin university studies in the upcoming academic year. The family expressed their gratitude for the support they have received from the community, emergency services, and those involved in the search.

Chief Inspector Jon Caisley from Northumbria Police offered condolences to Henry’s family and friends, acknowledging the difficult impact of the incident on the local community. He confirmed that despite the extensive search operations, Henry has not been located and is sadly believed to have died.

Local organizations have also paid respects, with Alnwick Rugby Club posting a tribute that remembered Henry as a cherished member of his family and community. A service of thanksgiving to honor his life is scheduled to take place on July 23 at All Saints Church in Rothbury.

The circumstances surrounding the capsizing remain under review, but no further details have been released regarding the cause of the accident. The incident has prompted an outpouring of sympathy in the Rothbury area as residents mourn the loss of the young sportsman.
