Professor Dr. Neem Chandra Bhowmik, a distinguished academic, diplomat, social welfare activist, and freedom fighter, passed away in the early hours of October 3, 2026, at the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital in Dhaka. According to a condolence message from the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, he died around 12:30 a.m. while receiving medical treatment.
Dr. Bhowmik played a significant role in community and social organizations, notably as one of the founders of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council. He also held key positions in the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, serving as both general secretary and president, as well as leading the Mahanagar Sarbojaneen Puja Committee as its president. The Mahanagar Sarbojaneen Puja Committee formally mourned his death, issuing a statement expressing their sorrow.
An academic by profession, Dr. Bhowmik was a former faculty member in the Applied Physics Department at Dhaka University. His contributions to the university extended beyond teaching; he served as provost of Jagannath Hall. In addition to his academic career, he represented Bangladesh as the country’s ambassador to Nepal, highlighting his diplomatic service.
The vice chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam, also publicly expressed condolences on the passing of Dr. Bhowmik, recognizing his impactful career in both education and public service.
