The government of Bangladesh is set to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of a full-scale international airport in Trishal, Mymensingh, according to Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat. The proposed airport, located near Dhaka, is part of a broader strategy to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the Mymensingh division.

Minister Millat announced the plan during an event organized by the Mymensingh City Corporation to honor students who achieved GPA-5 in the 2026 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations. The reception was held at Sarinda Sabari Resort in Mymensingh city. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that Mymensingh does not remain a neglected region, pledging collaboration with lawmakers, administrative bodies, and other stakeholders to promote development throughout the greater Mymensingh area.

The proposal aligns with Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to expand its aviation infrastructure and improve international air connectivity. In this context, the government has endorsed plans to enlarge Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ fleet, supporting the launch of direct flights to international destinations such as New York, Sydney, South Korea, and China. Minister Millat revealed that Biman has started acquiring 35 new aircraft, with deliveries anticipated to begin in 2037 and continue through 2036–37. These acquisitions aim to replace older planes and enable the national carrier to broaden its international operations.

Beyond the aviation sector, the minister outlined additional development projects for Mymensingh, including upgrading Mymensingh Engineering College into a full-fledged engineering university and creating a children’s park to enhance local amenities. The government is also focusing on transforming Birishiri in Netrokona into a nationally recognized tourist destination capable of attracting international visitors.

Minister Millat called for coordinated efforts to generate employment, reduce unemployment rates, and improve infrastructure across the division. He also pointed to ongoing development work on the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway as part of these broader initiatives to boost regional growth.
