Vincent Trocheck returned to New York City on Saturday night ahead of Sunday’s game against the New York Rangers, a team he represented for four seasons. Despite having faced his former club twice before in his career, Trocheck described the experience as consistently challenging, characterized by a mix of familiarity and personal reflection.
During his tenure with the Rangers, Trocheck’s family, including his two children, Leo and Lennon, grew up in New York, adding an emotional layer to his return. “I think everywhere you go, you kind of envision that being your last stop,” Trocheck said from a Manhattan hotel before the game. “So yeah, I think that was kind of the plan when I signed there. It was just to be there for the rest of my career. Things happen. It’s business and teams go in certain directions that you can’t really avoid decisions being made.”
Trocheck signed a seven-year, $39.38 million contract with the Rangers in July 2022 to serve as the team’s second-line center. He quickly became a key player, taking on significant responsibilities across various game situations. Trocheck saw critical ice time on the top power play unit, logged important minutes while shorthanded, and was relied upon as a clutch performer in high-stakes moments.
His contributions were recognized by fans who honored him with the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award for the 2023-24 season. That same season, Trocheck earned a selection to the NHL All-Star Game held in Toronto. The Rangers mounted an impressive playoff run in 2024, advancing to the Eastern Conference Final, where they ultimately fell two wins short of the Stanley Cup Finals. Trocheck led the team’s playoff scoring with eight goals and 12 assists over 16 games.
Despite his significant role, the Rangers’ recent struggles have been a disappointment to Trocheck, underscoring the competitive expectations he embraced while with the team. Sunday’s game ended with the Rangers defeating Trocheck’s current team, the Colorado Mammoth, by a score of 4-2 at Madison Square Garden.
