U.S. President Donald Trump remained noncommittal on Tuesday regarding endorsement of a candidate in Israel’s upcoming parliamentary elections, declining to confirm support for any contender, including current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Asked shortly before boarding Marine One at Joint Base Andrews whether he planned to back a candidate in the Israeli vote, Trump responded that no decision had been made. “We haven’t even thought about it,” he stated.
When pressed further about past instances where he had publicly endorsed political figures, Trump acknowledged the possibility of an endorsement, saying, “Well, we may be, I may be doing something,” without specifying who that might be. He made no reference to Netanyahu or any other Israeli politician during the exchange.
The remarks come as Israel approaches its election, with multiple candidates vying for leadership. While Trump has previously expressed support for Netanyahu, this time he opted to keep his position private, leaving the prospect of U.S. involvement in the election unclear.
