The Pentagon announced Monday that President Donald J. Trump has approved the use of a firing squad for the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the former Army officer convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. The decision follows a recommendation from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
Hasan was found guilty by a military court in 2013 for the attack at the Texas Army base, where he killed 12 U.S. service members and one civilian, and injured 32 others. During the shooting, Hasan reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar," according to Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.
This execution, set to be carried out by a U.S. Army firing squad, would mark the first military execution since 1961. The Secretary of the Army will determine the specific time and location of the carrying out of the sentence. The Pentagon characterized the decision as a significant step toward finalizing Hasan's case.
