Over the summer, Mr. Trump labeled the relatively new senator with disparaging nicknames, while aides in his circle also directed offensive insults at Mr. Ossoff following his criticism of the former president. In response, Mr. Ossoff has issued sharp rebukes of Mr. Trump, calling him “a failed president” and “a national disgrace,” a stance that has bolstered his profile and energized his 2024 reelection campaign.

Once considered among the most vulnerable Democratic senators, Mr. Ossoff is now viewed as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race. Political analysts point to Mr. Trump’s influence as a key factor in this political shift. While demographic changes—such as Georgia’s increasingly young, diverse population—and concerted efforts by Democratic organizers including Stacey Abrams have played important roles, many observers assert that Mr. Trump’s actions accelerated the transformation of Georgia’s political landscape.

Following his narrow loss in Georgia during the 2020 presidential election, Mr. Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of widespread election fraud discouraged Republican voter turnout and contributed to the party’s loss of both Senate seats in early 2021 runoffs, resulting in Democratic control of the chamber. His ongoing disputes with Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who resisted efforts to overturn the election results, further deepened divisions within the state GOP, leading to the rise of far-right factions such as the Georgia Republican Assembly. The group has sought to impose stringent ideological purity tests on candidates and unsuccessfully pushed to bar those viewed as insufficiently conservative.

As the MAGA movement took control of the Georgia GOP infrastructure, established Republicans like Mr. Kemp distanced themselves and created separate fundraising and voter mobilization operations. This internal strife shifted the party’s focus to niche issues, such as advocating for paper ballots, which have not resonated broadly even among Republican voters. Many GOP elected officials reportedly regard the state party more as a platform for airing grievances than as a tool for winning elections.

Mr. Trump’s continued involvement has seen limited success. His endorsed candidates frequently lost primaries or general elections in the 2022 and 2024 cycles; for example, Herschel Walker, his pick to challenge Senator Raphael Warnock, was unsuccessful in the general election. Though Mr. Trump narrowly carried Georgia in 2024, his approval ratings in the state have declined sharply since then. Notably, his gubernatorial endorsement in the 2024 Republican primary, Burt Jones, was defeated by Rick Jackson, a businessman with no previous political experience.

In the current Senate race, the Republican Party sought but failed to recruit Governor Kemp to challenge Mr. Ossoff, partly due to Kemp’s own fraught relationship with the MAGA faction. Consequently, the GOP nominee is Representative Mike Collins, a Trump-backed candidate with a controversial reputation. Mr. Collins, who hails from a political family, embraces a populist, combative style that appeals to the MAGA base but has struggled to attract broader support. His campaign has been hampered by numerous allegations including connections between his associates and known white nationalists, an ethics investigation over the misuse of public funds, and internal staff scandals involving ties to far-right figures.

These issues have caused even fellow Republicans, including gubernatorial nominee Rick Jackson, to publicly distance themselves from Mr. Collins. By contrast, Senator Ossoff, at 39 the youngest member of the Senate, maintains a comparatively composed and earnest public image that resonates with a shifting electorate. His adept use of social media and political agility have enhanced his appeal in what has become a more competitive statewide environment.

Observers suggest that the political dynamics set in motion by Mr. Trump’s interventions in Georgia have inadvertently paved the way for Mr. Ossoff’s ascent, setting the stage for him to strengthen his position and potentially mount a national campaign in the years ahead.
